Open the Cages: For an EU-Wide End to Cage Rearing    

Around 300 million animals in the EU still live in cages – with no space, no exercise, and no dignity. But Europe is at a turning point: the European Commission is once again considering a ban on cage rearing. We must not miss this opportunity! Millions of citizens are calling for a Union that shows compassion and takes responsibility. An end to cage rearing would be a historic step – for animals, who would finally be able to live freely, and for a society that faces up to its moral responsibility.

Ministry for Animals: A Genuine Political Voice for Animals    

Animals finally need strong, independent political representation. As long as animal welfare remains the responsibility of the Ministry of Agriculture, it will continue to be overshadowed by economic interests. A separate Ministry for Animals would finally take the protection mandate enshrined in the Basic Law seriously and give the millions of affected beings a credible voice – free from lobbying pressures, competent and with genuine decision-making power. Together, we demand: an end to conflicts of interest – for a fair political system that no longer overlooks animals.

Animals in Democracy: Together, we represent animals!

To strengthen the representation of animals in German politics, Animal Society e.V. is establishing a unique network. By bringing together expertise, commitment and dialogue, the aim is to develop new principles and institutions for animal policy.

tierpolitik.org – How animal-friendly are German policies?

Through our platform, tierpolitik.org, we highlight just how serious politicians and political parties really are about the interests of animals. On the site, we assess their positions, voting records and public statements on key animal welfare issues – ranging from farm animal husbandry and animal testing to wildlife.
The aim of the platform is to bring transparency to animal welfare policy and to enable citizens to make informed decisions. After all, animal welfare must be implemented through policy – and every voice counts in strengthening it at all levels.

#EUForAnimals

Billions of animals across Europe suffer as a result of cruel farming practices. There is also an urgent need to improve political representation for animals in the international arena. That is why, as co-signatories of the #EUforAnimals petition, alongside many other organisations, we successfully called for the creation of an EU Commissioner for Animal Welfare.

#TiereInsParlament

As part of the #TiereInsParlament campaign, we are campaigning to ensure that animals are adequately represented in political decision-making. To put a stop to anti-animal lobbying, we are calling for, amongst other things, the responsibility for animal welfare to be removed from the former Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL). This petition has already been signed by over 50,000 people.

Tiere Wählen – Vote for Animals

‘Tiere Wählen’ showed how parties voted on key animal welfare issues in the European Parliament during the last parliamentary term. The website also offered the opportunity to contact MEPs directly to find out their stance on animal welfare issues in the run-up to the 2024 election. The next European Parliament election will take place in 2029.

Since mid-2025, we have focused our campaign on EU animal welfare reform specifically on the key issue of ‘ending cage rearing’. The European Commission had already promised a comprehensive overhaul of EU animal welfare legislation back in 2020 – yet to this day, the announced reform proposals have not been published…

Ban the Culling of Chicks Across Europe!

Since mid-2025, we have broadened the scope of our EU campaign, which originally called for a ban on the systematic killing of chicks: the focus is now on ending cage rearing in the EU. Millions of animals still live in cages – without space, freedom or dignity – even though alternatives have long been available. Back in 2022, in our report ‘The End of Chick Culling in the EU’, we demonstrated that political will and technical progress can effectively put an end to animal suffering. We call on the European Commission to finally present the announced legislative proposal to abolish cage rearing and chick culling as part of the EU animal welfare reform.
